How we work
Methodology
Every listing on QuillAtlas is individually assessed before it appears. We don't accept payments for placement. The methodology below is the complete picture — no hidden steps.
How we vet
Reviewer: Gyorgy Bolyki. Every listing carries one of the following statuses:
- Visited — in-person visit within the last 12 months. We ordered and consumed food or drink and paid our own way. No comps, no press invites.
- Verified — contacted the venue directly and confirmed key details (address, hours, what they serve) without an in-person visit. Used where a visit is pending or impractical.
- Community-vouched — a named local contact with direct knowledge of the venue has vouched for its inclusion. The vouching contact is noted internally. We aim to follow up with a direct visit.
Vetting date and status are shown on every listing.
Inclusion criteria
A venue is considered only if all of the following hold:
- Independent. No national or international chains. Local mini-chains of 2–3 sites may qualify if locally owned and operated.
- Primarily food or coffee. A bar that serves food as a side is out of scope. The primary offer must be food, coffee, or both.
- Operational and publicly accessible.Open, taking customers, not "coming soon" or temporarily closed with no confirmed reopening date.
- In geographic scope. Phase 1 covers Watford, Hertfordshire only (WD postcodes, town centre and immediate surrounding wards).
- Sufficient review volume. At least 20 public reviews available for synthesis — below this threshold the AI summary is unreliable and we note it.
- Passes the editorial sniff test. Would a thoughtful local actually recommend this? If the answer is uncertain, the listing waits.
What we don't include
- Chains — Costa, Starbucks, Pret, Greggs, Nero, and any other national or international franchise. No editorial value to add.
- Paid placements— if a venue has paid us money, they don't get listed differently from anyone else. We currently take no money for listings.
- Unverified candidates— if we haven't visited, verified, or received a named community vouch, the listing does not appear.
- Closed or inaccessible venues — if a place closes, its listing is removed within 5 working days of us learning about it.
AI-synthesised review summaries
Each listing includes a structured summary synthesised from publicly available reviews across multiple platforms (primarily Google; supplemented with Tripadvisor where accessible). Here is what that process looks like:
- Collection — reviews are retrieved manually or via low-volume API access. We do not scrape at scale. Review text is not reproduced verbatim.
- Synthesis — an AI model (Claude or equivalent) reads the review corpus and produces a structured output: atmosphere, food/drink quality, service, price tier, dietary options, accessibility notes, and common weak points.
- Human review — the output is read by the editor (Gyorgy Bolyki) before publication. Anything that reads as wrong, overconfident, or misleading is rewritten or removed.
- Source count — the number of reviews used in synthesis is shown on each listing.
- Confidence — each summary carries a confidence indicator (high / medium / low) driven by sample size and recency of the source reviews.
- Last refreshed date — shown on every listing. Summaries are not evergreen; they reflect a point in time.
These summaries are editorial tools, not endorsements. They reflect what public reviewers said, synthesised and reviewed by a human editor.
Refresh cadence
- Listings are reviewed on a 6-month rolling cycle.
- Review synthesis is refreshed when significant new reviews appear or at least annually, whichever comes first.
- Major change signals — ownership change, sudden review drop, venue closure reports — trigger an out-of-cycle re-vet.
- Vetting date is shown on every listing.
